Romeo And Juliet

Two households, both alike in dignity,                       Two Families both the same status
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,                    In Verona is where we live
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,                An old family feud break
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.           Where everyone get involved grows grudge
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes               When two people are born doomed
A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life;               Two lovers take their own lives
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows               The parents pity over their loss
Do with their death bury their parents’ strife.            The death of lovers ended grudges
The fearful passage of their death-mark’d love,        Struggling to stay alive
And the continuance of their parents’ rage,              Their parent are still fighting
Which, but their children’s end, nought could remove, Their childrens death could not be forgotten
Is now the two hours’ traffic of our stage;                  Now two hours of our play
The which if you with patient ears attend,                patiently you will listen
What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend    Will miss the hard work and strive to mend

  1. This is good. The lines beginning “The fearful passage of their death-mark’d love” are better all read together. Have a go at reading them as one block and see what changes you should make to your translated version (clue: this is the chorus character speaking directly to the audience about the play)
